The Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF), located nine miles west of Salt Lake City International Airport, spans 35 buildings and over 1.35 million sf of space, housing up to 3,600 inmates. The facility was designed to provide ample natural light and access to services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, and education to give inmates the tools needed to reenter society more successfully. As the coordinating structural engineer, Reaveley was responsible for designing eight of the 35 buildings, comprising approximately 600,000 sf of space, which represented about 45% of the total project. Our team collaborated with other engineering firms to address site issues stemming from the corrosive soil and air. The largest construction undertaking in Utah's history to date, this project created a more modern and humane environment for inmates and staff, emphasizing direct supervision, increased daylight, security, and normalization of life to aid in inmates' reintegration into society.
