Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre Restoration
2015 ENR Mountain States Region Best Cultural/Worship Project
Considered the foremost cultural venue for performing arts in Utah, the 1913 Capitol Theatre was prioritized by Salt Lake County for renovation and restoration. This public/private endeavor included a lobby expansion, new flooring, new ticket and concession stands, 30 new toilets, raising the stage four inches to improve sightlines, more comfortable seating, and a complete HVAC system replacement. The project's second phase reconfigured house seating to accommodate an ADA-compliant cross aisle. A 20' wide section of the existing structural floor framing was removed and replaced, and existing elements were strengthened to accommodate the rigging loads required for upgraded lighting and audio equipment above the house floor. At the same time, roof parapet bracing brought the roof up to modern safety standards.
