Intermountain Alta View Hospital Reconfiguration
2018 UC&D Utah Most Outstanding Large Healthcare Project
It isn't every day you get to design a hospital on stilts! The steeply sloping site, seismicity, and the need to keep the hospital functioning during construction were exciting challenges to overcome with this high-performance project. As the primary healthcare facility for Salt Lake Valley's southeast neighborhoods, Intermountain Health opted to reconfigure and revitalize the existing Alta View Hospital campus fully. The reconfiguration provided more space for hospital services, updates for new technologies, and greater visibility and appeal to its growing patient base. A four-story patient clinic, five-story patient tower, new basement central plant, and rooftop Life Flight helipad redefine the possibilities for community healthcare campuses. Reaveley's structural solutions included bolted SidePlate connections for the steel movement frames. This first-of-its-kind application for a critical healthcare facility in a high seismic zone meant that the lateral force-resisting system connections could be erected in hours instead of days. Custom plate girders support the multi-story cantilevered buildings, resulting in more hospital and clinic space while providing ample covered drop-off areas for patients. The Galleria concourse, new receiving dock corridor, and cantilevered public stairs reveal the beauty and functionality of the architectural and community vision for Alta View Hospital.
