In this second phase of the Huntsman Cancer Institute expansion, Reaveley worked closely with the design team to ensure the implementation of efficient structural systems met the complex requirements of the state-of-the-art hospital. Located in the northeast corner of the University of Utah campus, the hospital is nestled into the bedrock of the foothill, requiring meticulous attention to design standards and performance levels. With a fast-track construction schedule necessitating phased construction, our team expedited the process by providing accelerated structural designs, enabling the facility to open at the earliest possible date. The project required intense coordination with the entire design team, who was tasked with adapting to changes in the building shell and recommending efficient solutions to ensure optimal functionality of all hospital components. The original facility includes 50 patient rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass for outside views and facilities to accommodate relatives for overnight stays, including showers, lockers, and small kitchenettes. A beautiful restaurant on the 6th floor, lounge areas, and an expansive plaza with spectacular views of the surrounding environment add to the people-friendly environment. The 2009 expansion of the hospital added 156,000 sf of new space for the development of better detection and safer treatment of cancer, including an additional 50 patient rooms, 25 exam rooms, a critical care unit, PET/CT Suite, Infusion Center, an expanded Cancer Learning Center, Wellness Survivorship Center, new Breast Health Center, and Chapel & Meditation Room. The existing space was also remodeled for four new operating rooms, breast MRI, and Intra-Operative MRI. The Intra-Operative MRI hangs on a new structure built inside the existing building that supports it as it rolls on overheard rails between an OR and scanning rooms. This innovative setup allows doctors to perform MRI scans for patients undergoing brain surgery without moving them from the operating room. This results in a better outcome for patients with less risk of infection and less chance for repeat surgery while saving time and money. It is the only facility of its kind in the Rocky Mountain region.
