In the News

The second phase of the Huntsman Cancer Institute expansion demanded intense coordination with the entire design team, who adapted to changes in the building shell and recommended efficient solutions to ensure the optimal functionality of all hospital components.

Situated in the northeast corner of the University of Utah campus, the hospital is nestled into the foothills' bedrock, requiring meticulous attention to design standards and performance levels.

With a fast-track construction schedule requiring phased construction, our team expedited the process by providing accelerated structural designs, enabling the facility to open as early as possible. The original facility includes 50 patient rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass for outside views and amenities for relatives staying overnight, such as showers, lockers, and small kitchenettes. A beautiful restaurant on the 6th floor, lounge areas, and an expansive plaza with spectacular views of the surrounding environment contribute to a people-friendly atmosphere.

The 2011 expansion of the Huntsman Cancer Institute added 156,000 sf of new space dedicated to better detection and safer cancer treatment. The project added 50 patient rooms, 25 exam rooms, a critical care unit, a PET/CT Suite, an Infusion Center, an expanded Cancer Learning Center, a Wellness Survivorship Center, a Breast Health Center, and a Chapel & Meditation Room.

The existing space was remodeled to include four new operating rooms, a breast MRI, and an Intra-Operative MRI. The Intra-Operative MRI is supported by a structure built inside the existing building, allowing the scanner to roll on overhead rails between an OR and scanning rooms. This innovative setup enables doctors to perform MRI scans on patients undergoing brain surgery without moving them from the operating room, resulting in better outcomes with less risk of infection, fewer repeat surgeries, and significant time and cost savings. It is the only facility of its kind in the Rocky Mountain region.
