University of Utah Rice-Eccles Stadium Expansion
Expansion of this 50,000-seat football stadium helped facilitate the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies and continues to serve the University of Utah football games. The new concrete steel stadium area includes luxury suites, a press box and plenty of bathrooms. Reaveley Engineers designed the press box tower to bear on a structural steel diagonal brace frame, which extends to the concrete foundation system below the concourse level. To facilitate construction sequencing, the tower’s lateral system was uniquely designed to perform as an independent structure then become compatible with the completed rigid concrete shear walls. Sight lines and vibration sensitivity were given priority for press box seating and seating frame systems. The expansion included demolition of the existing stadium -- except for the south end zone seating area -- to accommodate its impressive seating capacity.
