The eight-building hospital complex is the largest medical center in the Intermountain West and is Intermountain Health’s flagship medical center. Designed as a critical care facility, it is one of the most seismically stable hospitals in the country. Located on a 100-acre campus, the complex includes separate facilities for a 15-story critical care and trauma center, 7-story heart-and-lung patient center, 5-story women and newborns facility, 3-story cancer patient facility, 6-story outpatient treatment center, oncology and cancer center, education center, and core laboratory. The Medical Center was built on an old smelter site with caution. Construction workers skillfully constructed the 15-story trauma center foundation. In the foundation alone, there are 650 tons of rebar and 8,000 cubic yards of concrete. After 20 consecutive hours of concrete placement, 90 cement trucks making a total of 900 trips completed the mat footing to support the trauma center.
