Cedar City Library in the Park
2003 AIA Utah Utah Merit Award
The Cedar City Public Library, locally known as Library in the Park, incorporates new and recycled materials in its design, featuring primarily stone, wood, and glass. The heavy timbers used throughout the structure are railroad trestle beams harvested from rail lines that once served the Great Salt Lake. The wood was used for the primary structural columns and to support a canopy of stainless steel wire mesh at the entrance to the facility. Patrons enjoy shaded outdoor reading areas thanks to moveable canopies made of recycled materials. Glass panels engraved with famous literary quotes hang in various parts of the building. Large window spans provide natural light to the inside spaces and at night, while exterior lighting draws interest to the polished CMU surface.
